PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Five Nights at Freddy’s have more in common than you think.

Five nights of mediocrity

I remember the first time I saw the abbreviation FNAF. Five Nights at Freddy’s. I saw it everywhere. All gaming websites were mentioning it. It was the hot thing at the time. After reading a basic description I decided to check out some gameplay and I really couldn’t comprehend what the whole fuss was about. The game looked terrible. But it was famous. Extremely famous for a time. That’s when I realised it’s a fad. A few sequels and whatnot later, this ‘franchise’ faded away into nothingness.

if you stream it, they will come

We live in an age where mediocre games can become incredibly popular because of dumb luck and promotion from YouTubers or Twitch streamers. These games, in my opinion, are terrible, but once the cycle of internet promotion and word of mouth starts, quality doesn’t matter anymore. Some people choose to play the latest fad for that reason alone.

creed, head of quality assurance

I feel the same about PUBG. Here you have an unfinished game, made by a developer that’s not too keen on keeping promises sold through a service that allows you to pay full price for an unfinished game with the promise that it will be good one day. Is this the Twilight Zone? When did gaming become such a blatant cash grab?

dumpster fire

But of course, PUBG or PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds for those not familiar with it, has become one of the most played multiplayer games in the world. Video game streamers and word of mouth propelled an unfinished, broken mess of a game to tremendous fame while making a fortune for the developers. Insane.

Just a matter of time

Time will only tell if PUBG will suffer the same fate of all other gaming fads like FNAF. My guess is that it will. I would like to be proven wrong, just so people can get the full, stable experience they paid for both on console and PC. But something tells me that won’t happen any time soon. Are you for or against the practice of selling clearly unfinished games at full price? Do you disagree with my opinion on PUBG?
