We live in the age where hardly a day goes by where we’re not Googling a search term for work or even just checking to see what restaurants are nearby.

As our previous article on Google search algorithms shows, there are over 150 million active websites on the internet. Fortunately, Google’s algorithm does the legwork when searching web pages that contain the keywords you need, then assigns a ranking per page based on relevancy.

New algorithms are being developed on a daily basis. Online, there are more than half a million users learning algorithms on Udemy — covering topics from algorithms in JavaScript, to algorithms in Python. Indeed, knowing how to use these formulas is a skill worth having. And while it all sounds very complex, the simplest place you can start is by knowing how to refine your searches.

With the formula already readily available, all that’s left is for you to use the right strategies so you can yield the most meaningful answers.

Here are some tips to get you started.

Advanced searches

Even just using the advanced search filters puts you ahead of the game. These filters can be found under the “Advanced search” section of the Settings tab, which you’ll be able to find on the search homepage. Advanced searches allow you to filter results by region, language, and date, as well as allowing you to refine your keywords further.

Phrase your search items properly

Like we mentioned, Google’s algorithm works by searching keywords and phrases, so the key to better results often lies in your phrasing. Rather than searching for “what do I do if I have cramp,” for example, you might want to enter “cramp relief” or “cramp remedies.” The latter suggestions are typical phrases you’ll find on websites, which makes it easier for Google to pick up.

Use Boolean searches

As a way to help Google look through similar keywords, an article on Lifewire recommends using Boolean searches. Essentially, this type of search focuses on the terms “AND” and “OR”. “AND” tells Google that you want results with all the keywords, while “OR” can be used when you’re searching for something that has a similar keyword (for example: ‘primal’ and ‘paleo’ diets). Moreover, it’s important to use capital letters when typing the conjunctions. If you type them in lower case, Google will assume that these words are just part of your search term.

Search within a website

Before you conduct a search, you may already have an idea of websites whose information you trust. You can cue Google to check for particular websites by using the “site:[website name]” syntax function in the search box. Searching for “site:cnn.com” alerts Google to do an internal search on CNN, so you can do a more thorough search for the keywords you need.

Reverse image search through your phone

You’ve probably already heard of reverse image searches, as it’s a useful way to get information on a photo or a higher resolution alternative. PC Mag notes that this can be done even on your phone, simply by accessing the desktop version of Google on your phone’s web browser. Those who have the Chrome app on their phone can just press and hold an image until a menu appears with the “Search Google for This Image” option.

The Google algorithm is a complex system with a search index, which is used by Google search to retrieve relevant information for a search query. Through this algorithm, as well as a combination of number ranking signals and codes, Google search engine generates the best possible results, and ranks every web page accordingly on its search engine results pages (SERPs). So, these web pages are ranked based on their relevance.

Only a few algorithm updates were publicly announced by Google since they launched it, though thousands of changes are made every year. Some of these changes go unnoticed as they seem insignificant. However, major algorithm updates with significant impact to the search engine results pages (SERPs) were officially rolled out by Google.

Major Algorithm Launches, Updates & Refreshes

Below are some major Google algorithm launches, updates, and refreshes that have been rolled out in the past few years:

Mobilegeddon

RankBrain

Panda

Penguin

Hummingbird

Pigeon

Payday

EMD (Exact Match Domain)

Page Layout Algorithm

Significance Of The Google Algorithm To Every Search Engine User

It Makes Finding Useful Information Relatively Easy and Straightforward

On the World Wide Web, a lot of people take for granted how difficult finding useful information would be without Google or other search engines. People visit the Internet, search for certain information, and get results for it almost instantly, unaware that there are nearly 150,000,000 active websites on the Internet today.

If one is to go through all these sites while finding helpful information, it will definitely take forever to find anything relevant. To make this easy for people to find useful and relevant information, complex algorithms are used by search engines. These algorithms are mathematical instructions that instruct the computers on how an assigned task should be completed.

The Google algorithm system depends mainly on “keywords” to provide this relevant information.Since most web pages have a focus keyword (usually derived from the topic written). So, a simple Google search containing keywords will, therefore, return web pages containing these keywords. These pages will then be ranked based on certain factors, which include how frequent the keywords appear on the page. The web pages with the highest rank appear at the top of Google’s search engine results page (SERP).

The keyword search function Google uses is similar to that of other search engines. On the web, there are automated programs referred to as spiders or crawlers. These spiders or crawlers travel the web, as they build up an index page while moving from one link to another. This built-up index page includes certain keywords. When a user enters a search query containing a specific keyword registers for an index page, Google references this index while providing the result to the query.

The Google Algorithm Helps To Save Time While Finding Relevant Information

The fact that the Google search engine can provide useful information in seconds, out of the nearly 150,000,000 active websites on the Internet is something truly impeccable.

This means a user can get whatever information he or she desires, in record time.

Endnote

The comprehensive and ever-improving nature of the Google algorithm system has played a major role in making Google search engine the indispensable tool it has become today.

The Pixel 3 could definitely win “the most leaked phone in the history of smartphones” award and is finally released by Google. (MKBHD I’m talking to you). The Pixel 3 was released on Oct 9 2018. Google couldn’t resist the “notch challenge” so the Pixel 3 XL comes with one, even though they mocked Apple’s iPhone X last year for having one.
Summing everything up, the initial impressions of the Pixel 3 were mixed. Some people liked it and some others criticized it heavily. In my opinion the Pixel 3 lineup is a great phone, especially the camera. It has some new and unique features that definitely make it stand out. Google really tries to innovate and improve the way people interact and use technology in their daily lives making the Pixel phones proof of that.

YouTube announced at VidCon that it would be adding new ways to the platform for creators to earn money. Introducing additional monetization options was necessary after massive revenue losses experienced by many creators all over the platform due to the so called “adpocalypse”.

Channel Memberships

This feature was long awaited and finally made its’ way to YouTube. Viewers can now pay $4.99 to their favorite creators as a membership fee for additional perks. These perks might include exclusive content, chat benefits, emojis, badges and more. Currently there’s only one option for a membership fee, which is $4.99, but it’s expected that YouTube will be adding a few more in the near future. If you’re a creator on YouTube, you can enable the membership feature when you surpass 100.000 subscribers.

All about that merch baby

Since the adpocalypse, merchandize was the main source of income for many creators. YouTube seems to have understood this need and has now introduced a way to embed your merchandize on to the platform. More specifically, you can display your custom merch right below your video. Creators with at least 10,000 subscribers can use the feature and create up to 20 items. Creators with 100,000 or more subscribers can work directly with Teespring to handle all their merchandize.

YouTube aims to further improve how creators monetize their content on the platform in the near future. What’s left now is for the users to decide whether they are going to support their favorite creators or stick to watching their content for free.

Last year we reported that Larry Page was working on a secret project that focused on creating flying cars. Well, this year Google’s co-founder has delivered, at least partly, on his promise.

Kitty Hawk, which is the startup that has been working on this ambitious project, has managed to create the Flyer. This vehicle is a personal electric flying car, which uses propellers to hover and fly over lakes. The purpose of this aircraft is to enhance your personal flying experience, as they mention on their website.

Although they are not for sale yet, they might become available soon, since Kitty Hawk has already begun marketing the craft. In an effort to promote the Flyer, the company has invited one of the most famous and influential YouTubers, Casey Neistat, to test the craft. With just a few hours of training, Casey was able to fly the small aircraft with ease. You can watch Casey’s experience with the flyer on his recently uploaded YouTube videos.

It’s worth noting that Kitty Hawk has also been working on another electric aircraft, named Cora, which is intended to become a flying city taxi. You can follow Kitty Hawk’s entire progress on their official website.

With General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) on sight, every company that’s affected is rushing to comply with all the rules that it enforces. Many companies that once recklessly collected massive amounts of your personal information without showing you the full picture, are now obligated to disclose exactly what they have on you.

Google ofcourse is no exception to the rule. After the recent massive backlash on Facebook and it’s surveillance like data collection, internet users now demand to know exactly what other companies know about them.

Here’s how to download your Google archive

Step 1:

Head on to: https://takeout.google.com/settings/takeout

Step 2:

Select the information that you want to download and click “NEXT”. You have plenty to choose from since Google appears to know way too much about you and your whereabouts.

Step 3:

After selecting your desired delivery method, click “CREATE ARCHIVE”.

The amount of data stored by Google is massive, therefore you can expect your archive many hours or even days after your initial request.

Google becomes 19 years old and chose to celebrate its birthday with a surprise spinner. The spinner contains some of the most memorable Doodle games from the past 19 years. All you have to do is spin the wheel and play the doodle game that pops up on your browser.

The collection of Doodles contains games from several occasions like Beethoven’s birthday or the Halloween special game. The spinner even has an additional surprise, which is of course a brand new Snake game. If you wish, you can simply search for each game and play it separately but this kind of takes the fun out of the celebration

Germany has a new controversial law, forcing Facebook, Twitter, and other social media companies to pay fines up to €50 million ($57 million) for failing to remove hate speech. The law was passed on Friday and will take effect in October of 2017.

The law describes an action or strategy needs to implemented by social networks in order to take down every “obviously illegal” content uploaded by their users within 24 hours. The “obviously illegal” content consists of hate speech, defamation, and incitements to violence.

The pressure does not only focus on hate speech, but also on fake news, and terrorist propaganda from European Union leaders. In the past few months, Facebook and Google have launched campaigns to fight fake news and hate speech. More specifically, Facebook is ready to hire 3,000 more people in order to moderate flagged content more effectively.

Defining concepts like hate speech is really difficult and subjective. As Richard Allan from Facebook mentioned:

“Who should decide what is hate speech in an online global community?”

“People come to Facebook to share their experiences and opinions, and topics like gender, nationality, ethnicity and other personal characteristics are often a part of that discussion. People might disagree about the wisdom of a country’s foreign policy or the morality of certain religious teachings, and we want them to be able to debate those issues on Facebook. But when does something cross the line into hate speech?”

That’s a really interesting question. Any thoughts?
