Web-slinging into our hearts

Last week I finally got the chance to watch Spider-Man Homecoming and I found myself longing for a good Spider-Man game. Beenox’s ‘Shattered Dimensions’ and ‘Edge of Time’ were incredibly fun games, followed by disappointing outings based on the two ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ movie adaptations. With the post-movie hype still in effect, it’s safe to say I can’t wait to play the new Spidey game exclusive on PS4.

Proven developers

Developed by Insomniac Games, the people behind Ratchet & Clank and Sunset Overdrive, and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, Spider-Man PS4 aims to bring the franchise out of its slump. The developers are well known for crafting incredibly fun experiences and I have full confidence that they will deliver an open world web slinger to rival the epicness and novelty Spider-Man 2 had in 2004.

Familiar styles

From what we’ve seen until now, it looks like Insomniac is going for a Batman ‘Arkham’ style of combat with scripted events peppered throughout the experience to make everything have a cinematic feel to it. While these ‘on-rails’ moments may be off-putting to some, I believe they’re there to showcase all the important work that went into making this rendition of New York so stunning.

Eye-candy

Graphically it looks as good as you expect it to. Beautiful animations, character models and environments set the scene for the game. I especially like how it manages to achieve a realistic look without looking generic. As for Spidey’s suit, it looks….interesting. I can’t say I’m a fan of the design but I have hopes that it’s just the initial version and will gradually get better as you progress through the game. If it doesn’t, I’m sure it will grow on me when I get to play it.

Spider-Man on PS4 may very well be the new ‘Spider-Man 2’. Will you be checking it out when it releases in 2018?
