If it's not for you, it's not for you. No one's forcing you to buy any specific console. But the Switch doesn't cost more than an Xbox One X and that's a fact.

The answer is not Nintendo. Hell no!! How about that online service that is going to take five plus years (when its up) to try to even hold a light to MS/Sony's offerings.

I care not to buy a lesser version of my games to play on a lesser capable yet more expensive machine.... Add it all up and your "Switch" costs more than a damn Xbox one X!!!! I don't care if you can take that shtuff on a subway or a bus and play with yourself in public.....good.....good for you for having that time. Just like the damn weirdos walking.around getting mugged looking for them Pokémon garbage things.

Nintendo is the answer.......HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

In reply to <a href="https://www.badfive.com/the-magic-of-buying-a-new-gaming-console-is-gone/#comment-1718">Eh</a>.

I won't talk about Spider-Man because personally I haven't played it yet and I have nothing negative to say about what seems to be an incredible open-world experience.. So how interactive are those other games you mentioned?

Witcher 3: A stunning world with very little interactivity. No tree, building or structure will break based on your actions. It's beautiful indestructible scenery with very little physics interactivity built in the gameplay. Have you tried going off the beaten path in the Witcher games? You get bounding box issues, weird physics glitches and you generally feel robotic in the way your character interacts with their surroundings.

GTA: Which GTA are you referring to? IV is the better game for me just because of all the crazy ways you could interact with the environment. GTA V sacrificed A LOT of that interactivity, made driving feel more arcade-y and ended up feeling very different. GTA V is a masterpiece. But I still miss GTA IV's attention to detail like the level of damage cars can take and the way it's handled realistically based on which part is damaged.

God of War: Great game. Looks fantastic. You know why? Because the devs went the extra mile to incorporate ground tessellation, destructible environments and all sorts of cool physics in their game. Still it's not perfect. Kratos can still feel robotic at times but that's also due to the new camera they implemented.

Horizon: You can't climb mountains without weird animations and invisible walls, your arrows feel like a .50 cal sniper, there are invisible barriers everywhere limiting your exploration, fire arrows that burn underwater and many more. Is it a bad game? No. But what I'm saying is that I would trade all the 4K-checkerboarding in the world for a 900p Horizon with an interactive environment.

About PCs: No one said you have to buy the latest and greatest components. That's the beauty of it. You can make your own. Budget components exist and they can produce experiences that rival those of $500 consoles, give you more flexibility and last longer.

"Some of the best-looking games of this generation are about as interactive as Pong and that trend will undoubtedly continue once more power if available to developers. We will end up with beautiful yet “empty” games."

...what? What games are you even talking about? Spider-Man? Nope. God of War? Nope. The Witcher? Nope. GTA? Nope.

"The components needed to buy or build a good gaming PC will get cheaper as the years go by"

What? Have you seen the price difference between CPU's now and 10 years ago? Have you seen how expensive the RTX 2070 is, never mind the 2080 or 2080Ti? What if you compare the 2070 to the 970? The 970 was £259 when it launched.

"Sony and Microsoft have essentially trapped themselves in a future of non-innovation"

I hate to say this again, but here we go - what? Perhaps Microsoft are a little guilty of this, but Sony has been investing (and continues to) in VR, look at the exclusive games they have released over the past few years. I mentioned them earlier.

"producing a more powerful gaming console every 5-6 years is not a business model that will last long enough"

Well, it's lasted until now, right? What alternatives do people have? PC is too expensive, Nintendo are stuck in 2003 with their online system, so then you're with Sony and Microsoft.

Sorry, but I don't agree with much of this article at all. And I'm a PC gamer.

You disagree? Why? Are game consoles not underpowered by default because they have to be made affordable for the general market?
